<para>Before you can view "The Simpsons" video clip you will need to download the VLC player. Win 2000/XP users click on this link <html:a href="http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html">http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html</html:a>, and then click on a "Download (http)" link from the list titled "Windows self-extracting package (9MB)". Choose the download link closest to your personal geographical location. Make sure that you know where the file has been installed; then double click on it and follow the defaults. This will install the cross-platform open source VLC media player on your PC. The default path will be C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\. If you wish to change the path to "Desktop", or some other location, then do so.</para>
<para>Unfortunately, Windows 95/98/ME are not fully supported, but further information can be found using the same link.</para>
<para>The VLC player is also a complete video and audio streaming package. It enables you to stream audio and video from anywhere to anywhere. If you would rather read about the VLC media player prior to download then visit <html:a href="http://www.videolan.org/vlc/">http://www.videolan.org/vlc/</html:a> which is the VLC website home page. Users of other operating systems can also use this link in order to select the correct download.</para>
<para>Once you have the VLC media player on your PC you will be able to view "The Simpsons" video clip by downloading it via this <html:a href="images/thesimpsons.exe">http://www.cellularity.co.uk/images/thesimpsons.exe/</html:a> link. A download box should appear and you will be asked to save the self-extracting zip file to disk. Make sure that you know where the file is being saved. Double-click on the downloaded file and a VLC "traffic cone" icon should appear on your desktop. Double-click on this icon and the VLC player should open automatically and play the clip.</para>
<para>Using VLC, the captured AVI clip was transcoded with the open source Ogg/Theora video codec and the open source Ogg/Speex audio codec. The original 104MB AVI clip has been compressed to a mere 9.8MB with very little loss of quality.</para>
<para>After using VLC you might find that it has made itself the default media player. If this is not what you want then right click on any media file showing the VLC "traffic cone" icon. On the pop-up menu select "Properties" and then click on the "Change" button and select the required player from the list. This will reset all media files of the type selected.</para>
